EXPRESSIONS USING: TIME

According to some anthropologists after inventing time measuring (approximately a quater of a million years ago) human beings have become time-obsessed and in English there are some time-related expressions.

Here are some of them, I think they might be useful for you.

    IN TIME:

(just before the time arranged in advance/ before a disaster , a bad or uncomfortable situation occurs )

e.g. We arrived at the station (at 6:50) just in time to catch the train. The train left at 7:00.If we had got there a minute later. We would have had to wait for an hour and a half.

    ON TIME:

(punctually, at the time arranged in advance)

e.g.We arrived at the station (at 7:00) just on time to catch the train. The train left at 7:00.If we had got there a minute later. We would have had to wait for an hour and a half.

    TO LIVE ON BORROWED TIME:

1.To live in extreme danger;2 to have gone beyond a deadline:The idea is that the time you are using is no longer yours.

e.g.Fidel Castro is in his 80's and has ruled Cuba for more than 40 years. He´s living on borrowed time!

    TIME FLIES:

Time seems to pass  very quickly in retrospect ( especially in pleasant moments)

e.g."When I am with my girl, holding her, kissing her.....times flies...!

    TIME IS MONEY/GOLD:

If you are inactive you are not making/earning money, but you continue to incur costs.

e.g.Hurry up time is money!;We have to finish this work today.

    TO KILL TIME.

To do something before your next task, appointment or activity so as not get bored.

e.g.I was surprised to see my boss killing the time by doing a crossword.

    TIME WILL TELL:

Wait and see, we will only know the answer when some time has passed.Time will be the arbiter and will decide where the truth lies.

e.g.Who's better George Bush or Obama ? I don't know! Only time will tell!!

THERE IS A TIME AND PLACE FOR EVERYTHING:

Everything has its appropriate moment and situation.

e.g.We shouldn´t argue in front of people. There´s a time and place for everything.

TO HAVE THE TIME OF ONE'S LIFE:

To enjoy yourself a lot. This exaggerated expression implies that you enjoyed yourself more than on any other occasion in your life.

e.g.The children had the time of their lives at the zoo.

    DAYTIME & NIGHTTIME:

    Daytime:period while there is daylight.

    Nighttime:period of darkness at night.

e.g.Daytime in Cancún is for swimming and playing and Nighttime is for dancing and drinking!!

    BEDTIME & PLAYTIME:

Bedtime:the time when children are expected to go to bed.

    Playtime:time for playing or recreation.

e.g.O.K.,boys bedtime! turn the lights off!

e.g. Easter Week in México;Playtime for children cause they don´t go to school!!

    MEALTIMES:

    Lunchtime: 12-2 p.m.

    Teatime: 4-5 p.m.

    Dinnertime:7-8 p.m.

    Suppertime:8 p.m.-

e.g.I didn´t eat anything at lunchtime so I´m starving! I could eat an elephant!!

"As time goes by" You must remember this,a kiss is still a kiss;A sigh is just a sigh; The fundamental things apply,as time goes by. Herman Hupfeld -Casablanca-
